Mindful Mates

If you can spot the early signs that something may be affecting a colleague’s mental health, you may be able to help them before problems become more serious!

May 2023

At every stage of life, we all face challenges that can affect our mental health. And since we spend a significant amount of time together in our workplace, it becomes even more important to be aware of each other’s well-being.

By promoting mental health awareness in our company, we’re empowering you to spot early signs and offer support before issues become more severe. It’s about creating a friendly and caring environment where everyone feels comfortable and supported.

Common indicators of mental health problems include changes in behavior, decreased performance, frequent absences or lateness, social isolation, and visible signs of emotional distress. If you spot these signs, there are several ways you can provide support:

  • Create an accessible environment where open conversations about mental health are encouraged and where colleagues feel comfortable asking for support.
  • Express genuine concern and listen carefully, providing a safe space for your colleagues to share their thoughts and emotions.
  • Familiarize yourself with resources available in the company or from external organizations, referring your colleague to appropriate assistance.
  • Encourage professional help by suggesting therapy, counseling, or consultation with mental health professionals.
  • Above all, respect your colleague’s privacy and share information only when necessary for their safety or with their consent.

And always remember that we are not a substitute for professional help so you should always encourage your friend to seek specialist guidance.

For us, prioritizing mental health in the workplace also means fostering a culture of empathy, understanding, and support, where we can all contribute to a workplace where everyone is important.
